Our Club Boats - The Victoria and ODOM
Because each class
of boat has different characteristics and performance on the water, and so that all members have a common basis
from which to sail and learn, we have chosen two standard One-Design Class club boats: the Victoria, and the ODOM.
The Thunder Tiger Victoria,
a scaled-down version of an America's Cup style yacht, was selected because of its durability, affordable price,
and exceptional sailing performance. The Victoria's measurements are: Length - 30.7 inches, Mast Height - 42.8 inches,
Sail Area - 433 square inches, Beam - 7.7 inches, and, by class rules, must have a
minimum Racing Weight of 4.5 pounds. The Victoria is sold
as a kit and may be purchased at local hobby stores or on the Internet.
The Odom and the Victoria classes are both sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA).
The ODOM (One-Design One Meter) Class
is the club's higher performance class. The ODOM is somewhat larger than the Victoria. It is, as the name implies,
one meter (39.37 inches) in length, has a beam of 8.25 inches, stands about 6 feet tall and has a minimum racing weight
of 7 lbs. 6 oz. The ODOM can be only be purchased from GRP Model Yachts in Freedom, California.
Addition Information
Links to websites that have additional information for new or prospective
model yacht owners, including the websites of boat/kit retailers and sites with tips and detailed recommendations for assembling the kits, can be found on
our Related Links page.
IMPORTANT: The ODOM and Victoria model yachts both require
a two channel R/C transmitter for controlling the sail and rudder positioning servos, and each boat must operate
on a unique radio channel, so before ordering your boat, be sure to check with the HLMYC secretary so that
when ordering you can specify an R/C frequency that will not be in conflict with those in use by other members
of the club.
